Kristen Profile Picture

I am at war to keep great people skills, traditions and values alive in the 21st century.

That's why I've started a place to share tangible, simple, mini-lessons that will help build our kids into outstanding adults.

And if not, they'll have memories of one corny mom! That's a win-win, I'd say.

Labor Day Traditions - Homeade Ice Cream

Labor Day has too many meanings for people….the end of summer, the beginning of hunting season, the Kick Off of College Football (what we live for HUGE at my house!), neighborhood barbeques, final campouts, or maybe just a day off work.

One thing I love about Labor Day? Homeade Ice Cream. You know, the delicacy of summer that you intend to make all through out the summer and find yourself making once. When it’s Labor Day and you’ve realized what a summer failure you were. Alas! You are redeemed!

I found this recipe over at Kevin & Amanda’s. BEST part = No Ice-Cream Machine required. Love it!

Back To School

Back to School means back to Blogging and getting back into real life….ah the bittersweet morsels of life! I thought I’d kick off the new school year with a poem my daughter wrote. She is truly amazing. No bias. Whatsoever.

The First Day of School

The first day of school is nearing

the teacher, the students, the classroom, I’m fearing.

The school supplies, lunch boxes, backpacks and books

some hairbows and headbands and barretts for her looks.

And text books, notebooks, planners and such!

Why do we need all this much!?

Not to mention, shoes and clothes

the coupon I’m holding is only for Lowe’s.

The day has arrived and we’ve got in the car

Can you imagine how nervous we are?

I smile at Mom and then glance at the mirror

I check all my stuff and I couldn’t be clearer.

We stop, we look, we walk right in…

LOOK AT MY FRIENDS AND MY DESK AND MY BIN!

I’m so happy to start on the first day of school

I’ll fit right in, I’ll be so cool!

Baking Bread

Do you know how to bake bread at home? How did you learn? Not saying our kids will ever go hungry if there are no bread makers, but this is a non-negotiable skill to teach my kids before they are out on their own. And….

This is a MUST in the summertime! It is true there is nothing like fresh, warm bread during a winter storm, but I’ve got quite a few reasons to support summer baking:

  • Successful dough rising in Summer heat is easier than blowing your budget at Costco. Let the heat work for you!
  • Kids can be present for the entire process. It’s a great ‘filler’ with lot’s of breaks to read, take a walk or heaven bless you with a nap…When they are at school, kids don’t get to see bread from tiny specks of stinky yeast all the way to full-blown glorious baked loaves.
  • Don’t discredit the memory making experience. It sounds crazy, but one bread baking event will be talked about forever!

Happy bread-making and I would LOVE to get pictures. I will post them when I get them….for some heavy-duty healthy bread making, check out my friend at Dip Makes Me Happy.

My favorite homeade bread recipe is for French Bread. It is a to-die-for result and oh so easy,

Giveaway – You Go Catch a Fish

I apologize for not giving an end date to the Fix It and Forget It Giveaway! I will end it on July 5th midnight.

I also wanted to explain that a lot of my posts may have a Jekyll and Hyde situation going on here, we’ll use Catch a Fish as an example…

There is one side of me, we’ll call her ‘Molly’, who really, really wants to go teach my kids to catch a fish. She even found my previous post interesting and actually wants to follow the steps! Think of the bonding, communicating and happy memories we can make. She’s such a goodie goodie.

Then there’s real life, and that side of me that say’s “Really? Are you kidding?” we’ll call her ‘Martha’. She’s a busy little beast who can only be caged for mere moments. She wanted to say “You go catch a Fish” or “send the kids off with your hubby to fish, while you get a pedicure and read a book in the sunshine all day”.

If you have a Molly and a Martha, welcome to my world. You should find both satisfied in future posts. Just wanted to clear up the insanity.

I was recently contacted to try out the “Fix It and Forget It, Revised & Updated” Cookbook to review! How exciting to have the opportunity to receive the updated version, as I already love the original book. Even better news: I have an extra to Give Away!! YIPEE! Entry guidelines are listed below.

Fix It and Forget It is all about slow cooker appetizers, main dishes, sides and desserts. The updated version has over 100 new recipes and my favorite page is the slow cooker myths and tips to make your appliance work even better for you. I probably don’t even need to say how much my family love-loved the following recipe we tried, my pictures should make you drool…

I love this last picture, it shows the layers of frosting on top, and the moist goodness on the bottom. Not to mention the decadent pecan on my fork…yes, it was divine!
