I am at war to keep great people skills, traditions and values alive in the 21st century.

That's why I've started a place to share tangible, simple, mini-lessons that will help build our kids into outstanding adults.

And if not, they'll have memories of one corny mom! That's a win-win, I'd say.

Candy Bouqets: a Great Way to Say 'Thank-You'

This is a fun Spring idea for saying ‘Thank-You’. We used this with some mentors in my daughter’s last musical, and I also intend to use it for teachers! (school, karate, voice, etc)

Things You’ll Need:

  • Flower pot (I used Terra-Cotta)
  • Floral Foam
  • Paper confetti
  • Shish-ka-bob sticks (these have a real name, you know what I mean right?)
  • green marker
  • decorative/fun paper
  • scissors
  • candy (look for flat, so you can steak ‘em!)
  • scotch tape

1) Cut your foam to fit your pot. How high you want it is up to you and how you want your pot to look. Mine is tall, so the foam goes to within an inch of the top.

2) Marker the sticks green. Great job for the kidlets!

3) Cut flower shapes out of paper. Another GREAT job for the kidlets (if they are old enough for scissors. Come on, did I really need to clarify?)

4) Layer flower shapes (for texture and fun) with a candy on top. I used tape to reinforce the candy on the paper. Then steak ‘em with the stick.

5) Once your flowers are assembled, stick them into the foam. Be patient here, this is where the real ‘design’ work takes place. Cut sticks at the bottom if you need height layers.

6) Fill the pot with paper confetti to finish it off!

I hope you have as much fun with this as we did….please share your pictures and I will post them! kristen@thingstolearnathome.com

Do You Have Monsters Under the Bed? In the Closet?

Check this out! MonsterMeter is a new app that allows parents to detect monsters in your child’s room (or anywhere for that matter:)

“This iPhone/iPad app was created to help kids everywhere feel safe in their rooms and get a good nights rest. When a child tells there parent that they cannot sleep because a monster is under the bed or in the closet, the parent simple says “Lets check it out with Monster Meter”. They can then show the child how the Monster Meter works and prove to their child that there are NO monsters in the room.”

How cool is that? I love this idea! There are four seetings: the Green Meter, Metallic Meter, Radar Scanner, or Grid Scanner. There’s also small print for parents eyes ONLY with instructions to make the meter work “better” in situations like a Haunted House *nudge nudge*. Hee!

Since this is a parenting site, it wouldn’t be complete without the latest ‘monster-hunting’ technology. Goodness knows we parents are professionals!

I've Got It All Under Control...Prayer, Part 2

My last post probably covered best how to help kids understand the purpose behind saying their Prayers. This post has some great insight for bigger kids…maybe us I guess! There are so MANY reasons TO pray. I admit, I forget these reasons very often. I dare you to find a problem that can’t be solved in that list! And for a bonus challenge? See if your prayers change after this refresher!

Why Do We Pray?

In the book of Moses, Adam and Eve were commanded to pray. To repent and call upon God in the name of the Son. This commandment has never been taken away. That is the 1st reason we should pray, because it is a commandment.

Second, prayer will help us draw closer to God. All of our thoughts, our words, and our actions are influenced by our prayers. So if we aren’t praying and being influenced that way, what thoughts, words and actions fill our lives? I think Satan is a pretty opportunistic fellow, and would love to influence by default if we’re going to be passive about our lives.

Third, unless you like taking Satan on by your own lonesome self, prayer is a tool. In a revelation to Joseph Smith, the Lord told him to pray for strength to resist the temptations of Satan and his followers. (D&C 10:5) We are on Satan overload right now, as the world is winding down aren’t you amazed at the cunning ways of Satan. He is not using the same tricks generation upon generation. He identifies the chinks in our armor faster than we do, and exposes them for us. He has had thousands of years to gain wisdom in what works best to make us miserable. Happy thoughts right? Prayer is our #1 defense to keep him at bay. To prevent the weakness, to fight the weakness and to ‘come off conqueror’. I also love the verbage used there when it says “escape the hands of his servants”

Fourth, Pray to confess our sins to God and ask Him to forgive us. In my experience, cuz I have loads of repentance experienceJ this works two-fold. The Spirit is what cleanses you from sin, when you pray for forgiveness you will not only feel the cleansing of the Spirit, but you will also be emboldened to resist further temptation.

Fifth, Pray for guidance in daily life. Our families, friends, neighbors, daily work, and our other activities. Also, protection from our enemies.

Sixth, turning from the temporal to the spiritual. We should Pray to express love to Heavenly Father and thank Him for our welfare and comfort. For all things He gives us each day.

And last, pray to ask for strength in living the gospel. To keep on the strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life. Pray to be righteous in our thoughts, words, and actions.

When Shoul We Pray?

In Alma it speaks of praying morning, midday and evening. We pray to give thanks and ask a blessing on food. We are commanded to have family prayers so that our families may be blessed. Church leaders counsel us to pray as families each morning and night. We open and close Church meetings with prayer, to ask for His help to worship in a manner that pleases Him.

To make it easy? We should pray ALWAYS. But if you are like me and beat yourself up with perfectionism, listen up! You’re going to love the answer I give you in Prayer, Part 3!

Boys and Chapter Books

Tired of Bugars, Burps, Bathroom Words and more in your son’s Chapter Book selections? Me too. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a prude. In fact, my husband has to get after me for acting like our 9 year old son (my excuse: I have digestion diseases. Hee!) I just have a hard time believing that this is what it takes to get our boys to read. Really?

Girls are so much easier with fairies, horses, babysitter’s clubs, mermaids, and romance. And that’s only a mere smathering of the feminine genre. Easing from picture books to chapter books is seamless. Boys? Not so much.

Sure boys love animals and adventure, but why in the world is it so hard to find boys diving into chapter books as easily? Don’t look at me….I’m asking you! I really don’t know :D

My son has been a bit of work, but he does love reading! We’ve outlawed some tasteless fiction at our house, and that made for an upset boy. BUT, after working a bit on research, we have found a few ‘boy-catching’ books that have harnessed his reading enjoyment. The first was ‘The Great Brain’ series. Oldies, but goodies. We still had to press through the first book awhile before he got ‘bit’ by the “I can’t put this down” bug. But it eventually happened.

The second is “The Strange Case of Origami Yoda”. This even doubled the fun with directions on how to make your own Origami Yoda (as pictured). Highly recommend this book!

Hope this helps anyone having the same struggle and if you have conquered it….I’d love to know your tricks for getting boys into chapter books!
